Life Transitions: Retirement, Job Loss and Empty Nest
Freedom in Christ Counseling
Retirement, job loss, and an empty nest can be brought into life transitions counseling as changes in role, responsibility, and purpose. You do not have to describe a new season as either an opportunity or a failure before talking about it. Josh works with Christian men on transitions and identity, with clinical care and a biblical worldview together.
01
Name What Has Changed About Your Role
Start with the transition itself and what you want to discuss about it. A change in work or family responsibilities may prompt questions about purpose or identity. Those questions have a place in Josh’s work. This guide does not describe how every man experiences retirement or job loss, or assume what an empty nest means for your marriage.
02
Loss and Purpose Can Be Discussed Together
Some losses are not deaths, including a career, calling, health, or marriage. Josh’s grief counseling includes those concerns. You may also want to address anxiety, low mood, or feeling that you are performing a role that no longer fits. The conversation can include several connected concerns without requiring one of them to explain the entire transition.
03
Clinical Methods and Faith in Everyday Life
Licensed in Ohio as a Professional Clinical Counselor with supervision designation, Josh uses CBT, EMDR, and psychodynamic counseling. He integrates those methods with a biblical worldview. Thoughts and responses, painful memories, and recurring patterns can enter the clinical work. Identity in Christ and responsibility can be considered alongside practical questions about the role you are leaving or entering.
