Christian Counseling With EMDR

A distressing memory can shape present reactions. Counseling can begin with what you notice today.

Who It Is For

When Memories Keep Intruding

Christian men age 18 and up may bring painful memories, trauma, or reactions that feel connected to past events. Josh Reed, LPCC-S, considers your concerns before discussing whether EMDR belongs in your counseling.

Understanding EMDR

A Structured Approach to Distressing Memories

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, includes attention to a memory and the thoughts, emotions, and physical responses connected to it. Bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or alternating taps, accompanies focused memory work.

Preparation Comes Before Memory Work

The process includes discussing your history and preparing before focused work begins. You can ask about each step and discuss concerns about becoming overwhelmed. Time is set aside to settle before closing the session; every appointment does not require focused memory work.

Preparation also gives you time to understand what focused attention on a memory involves. Tell Josh if a particular reaction concerns you or if you have questions about eye movements or tapping. Those questions belong in the discussion before deciding how to proceed.

Faith and Clinical Care

Your beliefs belong in the conversation.

Josh uses EMDR alongside CBT and psychodynamic counseling within a biblical worldview. Your preferences shape whether prayer or scripture is included. Discussing painful experiences does not require putting your Christian beliefs aside.
